Erin woke up refreshed and smiling. She showered and dressed, then headed down to the small restaurant that was in the hotel. After eating, she checked her email and made a few notations on Katie’s file before she headed out to wander around Ennis. Once again, she acutely felt the presence of her father. They would come up to visit the town whenever they had the chance. Her father had some distant relatives in town, so they inevitably ended up there for tea in the afternoon. Later, after they had a small dinner, they would go to the train station to head back to Tralee. From there, they rode to Ballyheigue.

Again, Erin felt the loneliness of being all alone in the world. She knew she still had some cousins in Ballyheigue, but she was reluctant to seek them out. After the stories she heard from her Aunt Patty, she realized she didn’t need the upheaval in her life. No, I’m doing fine by myself. Still, the pull to look in the local phonebook was strong. Looking at her watch, she was surprised to see how much time had passed since she left the hotel. Looking around, she saw a small café that she hoped served lunch.

Back at the hotel after her snack, Erin thought about the five-hour ride back to Dingle. She thought about taking the train but decided not to. Besides, she didn’t want to drive from Tralee to Dingle in the dark, even if she had a car at the train station. She wanted the time to go over Katie’s file further, and she was hoping to call Katie to give her an update. She stood in the lobby watching for the driver, who was taking her back to Dingle.

Seeing the driver pull up, she grabbed her shoulder bag and suitcase and headed to the door. Noticing an older woman just in front of her, Erin grabbed the door as it didn’t look like she had a free hand to get it.

“Helen?” Erin looked at the small older woman with whom she spent a pleasant hour the night before.

“Yes? Oh, Erin dearie, thanks for holding the door. I noticed that my ride was here. Right on time, too! It looks like you’re leaving also. Heading to Shannon for the long trip back to Chicago?”

“No, actually, I saw my ride arrive also. I’m heading down to Dingle. I need to finish my job. Dingle is where I must be. This weekend was just a side trip for me. Nostalgic, if you will. Where are you headed?”

“Tralee.”

“I wonder if we’re riding together. Would they do that?”

“Of course, they would, the boyo who owns this car company is the cheapest man God ever made. Don’t tell anyone I said that. If he could save himself money on petrol and still charge another fare, he would. Little bastard, but he’s the only game in town. I’ve never met anyone named Murphy who was not a criminal. Bloody, rotten family. I’m sorry, I shouldn’t go off like that.
